Booking a Visit
Call and describe what the door is doing: one side hanging lower than the other, a cable visibly off the drum, or the door that won't budge at all. That tells us whether we're bringing a standard cable set or something sized for a wider double door, which is more common on the newer construction in Miami Lakes than it is closer to Aventura. We don't keep a branch in Miami Lakes, so every visit is scheduled from our Aventura shop - we'll give you a realistic arrival window rather than guess at a response time we can't back up from 12 miles away.
What Causes It Around Here
The mild temperate climate here doesn't put the same stress on cables that freeze-thaw regions deal with, so when a cable goes on a Miami Lakes door it's almost always wear, not weather damage - fraying where the cable wraps the drum, a bent drum from an old impact, or a cable that was undersized for the door's weight to begin with. On the wider double doors typical of this later housing stock, the cables carry more load across a bigger span, so a partial fray can snap under normal use with no warning. We also see cables that were never matched to the door's actual weight when a previous owner swapped panels or added insulation without rebalancing the system.
What It Costs
We price cable repair by what's actually broken: one cable versus a matched pair, standard drum versus a wider one sized for a double door, and whether the drums or bearing plates got damaged when the cable let go. We don't quote a number over the phone before we've looked at the door, because guessing low and then changing the price on-site is how trust gets lost. What we can tell you is that a clean cable replacement is a straightforward job - it's the damage a snapped cable can do on the way down that adds to the bill.
The Complications
A cable rarely fails alone. On a wider double door it often takes a bent track, a cracked bottom bracket, or a dented drum with it, and if the door slammed down hard it can rack the frame enough that the door won't seat square afterward. If we open the door up and find the drums are worn or the torsion spring was already underrated for the door's weight - not unusual on homes where someone added an insulated panel upgrade without rebalancing the spring - we'll say so and tell you rebalancing the whole system is worth more than just swapping the cable and sending you off.
